What foods is the city of Dallas and Fort Worth known for?

New York has New York-style pizza and bagels, Chicago has Chicago-style pizza and Italian beef, Philadelphia has the Philly cheesesteak. What about Dallas? What do they have specifically from that city?

  1. wings???
  2. The regional food is Bar B Que, we cook brisket, not pulled pork, or other meat products. It is different than what you get in other parts of the country.
  3. Chicken-fried steak with cream gravy is the classic Dallas dish. Side dishes with chicken-fried steak are usually mashed potatoes, a biscuit, and country-style green beans. Both Dallas and Fort Worth are also known for Tex-Mex food, which is different from true Mexican food. Texas-style chili is a related local dish. For desert, you might have "Tres Leches" cake, a more or less Mexican dish that has gained popularity in the Dallas area in the last couple of decades. As in most of Texas, Texas-style barbecue is also not to be missed in Dallas and Fort Worth. Corny dogs, those things with a wiener on a stick surrounded by corn bread, were invented at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Fletcher's Corny Dogs is the original, and still the best, maker and seller of corny dogs. Other brands usually call them "corn dogs" or some other name, because Fletcher's still owns the rights to the name "Corny Dog." In days gone by, Dallas was known as the home of Shanghai Jimmy's Chili Rice, but Jimmy died several years ago and (as far as I know) no one is making his chili rice now. Now I've made myself so hungry I'm going to stop and eat something.
  4. BBQ and Mexican and Mrs Bairds bread
  5. Frozen margaritas were invented in 1971 in Dallas at Mariano's Restaurant. It almost tops the invention of the integrated circuit by Jack Kirby of Dallas-based Texas Instruments in 1958.
  6. Steak! And Tex-Mex, which is awesome.
  7. We are all about the Tex Mex!!! Ummmmmmm.....
  8. the BBQ in the area is great... you can go out to Richland Hills to Sammy's BBQ or out to Southlake for "the Feed Store" .... both places are awesome. Also, if you are looking for somewhere a bit fancier... check out III Forks/Silver Fox steakhouse..... the filet mignon is about $50 but its worth every penny If you want somewhere that has good steak but doesnt cost as much...go to Texas Land and Cattle (TLC) and get the smoked sirloin and spicy ceasar salad
  9. Dallas like any major city has a great variety of foods from everywhere, and each have great places. As far as what we are known for, BBQ is one. Baker's and Peggy Sue's are two of my personal faves. Baker's has a location on Greenville Ave. and one downtown, both are equally as delicious. Peggy Sue's has been there for decades and is a local fave. It is directly across from Southern Methodist University. And even Dickey's which is a local chain is not a bad inexpensive choice for a quick BBQ bite to eat. They are everywhere in the city. Dallas also has great burgers, Angry Dog in Deep Ellum has been voted best for years running and I also think Adair's, which is just around the corner from Angry Dog, makes a fabulous burger and is a true Dallas hole-in-the-wall experience. Also legend has it the frozen margarita was invented in Dallas and Blue Goose on Greenville has some of the best in town not to mention a great Sunday brunch. Tex-Mex is also a staple in Dallas. Mi Cocina has some of the best tex-mex known to man and any true Dallasite would recommend it to anyone. Joe T. Garcia's in Ft. Worth is also a Tex-Mex fave to locals, sports stars and celebs alike. Dallas is a decent city for foodies, but just ask around and most Dallas lifers won't ever steer you in the wrong direction. Have Fun and enjoy.
  10. Bar Be Que and Texmex
